THE VITAL IMPORTANCE OF THE JURY SYSTEM

“Fifty years ago, an Old Bailey jury brought in unanimous not guilty verdicts on all 31 counts at the end of a 10-week trial of 14 pacifists and and anti-militarists accused of conspiracy to contravene the 1934 Incitement to Disaffection Act. (The 14 had distributed leaflets to members of the armed forces telling them how they could quit). But both prosecutor.and judge were clear from the outset that the idea of pacifists wanting to communicate with soldiers was so heinous that some of us needed putting behind bars for years. If there had been no jury, then – in line with current government proposals – we would all have been convicted and and many of us would not have walked free for a long time! “

POINTS WORTH NOTING

*Per the Resolution Foundation, the Iran war will cost typical household incomes £550 this year, and increase government borrowing by £16 billion by 2030.

*Per Labour Hub, Rachel Reeves used the word “security” 17 times in her Mais lecture. Every time it was about guaranteeing security for capitol. Not once did Reeves mention the economic security of the British public.

*Per a study of British populists by the pollster, More in Common, about 85 per cent believe big business takes advantage of people. A majority say we should close the gap between rich and poor even at the expense of growth, and 56 per cent believe Britain would be better off with stronger trade unions.
